One of eBay’s most powerful tools for growth is Promoted Listings.
If you’re not using promoted listings, you’re leaving money on the table. They’re responsible for more than half the traffic driven to a given eBay users listing. It’s how you go from being invisible to being front and center in searches even on your competitors’ listings.
eBay reserves the top four search spots for promoted items and rotates them constantly. That means if you’re running ads, your products get a shot. No promotions? You’re not even in the game.
Let’s break down the three ad types I recommend running.
1. Standard Campaigns (Pay Per Sale %)
Zero risk: only pay if you make a sale. I recommend a 3-6% ad rate across all listings. It consistently drives traffic without eating into profits too much.
2. PPC (Pay Per Click)
Set a low bid like $0.10 or $0.20 and let eBay choose where your item fits best. Low bids get picked up for low-competition spots. If you’ve got 10,000 items, 1,000 will perform well here.
3. Offsite Ads
These push your products on Google and other platforms. Use the same low-bid strategy here. eBay’s algorithm figures out where your listings can win externally.
Here’s a bonus most sellers miss: running promoted listings also boosts your free traffic. When eBay sees you investing in visibility, it rewards you by pushing more of your listings in organic search too.
Just be careful, don’t go too aggressive. Going above 20% ad rates can wreck your organic visibility and lock you into higher costs long-term. Stick to 3–5% and stay consistent.
So if you’re just getting started, begin with a simple standard campaign. You’ve got nothing to lose and visibility to gain.
